Commissioned from the Augustine Institute of Denver Colorado, this image of Mary is full of deep meaning. With a blend of realism and traditional iconography, this image is sure to please a variety of taste buds.
Mary sits on her throne as Queen of Heaven and earth as she is about to accept the invitation to be the Christ bearer. She leans forward with the hope of many generations awaiting the Savior. The trinitarian light is shinning directly on her womb. Behind her are the words, "Ave" and "Eve" as she is the new Eve that the angel is greeting. She is in the middle of both work and prayer as the bible is open on her lap and the knitting yarn in on the ground. She reads from the book of Zechariah, "Sing and Rejoice, O daughter Zion: for behold, I come, and I will dwell in your midst, declares the Lord." The red yarn, often shown in iconography, is from the tradition that Mary was the one to weave the temple veil. She will now become the one to veil Christ in her womb.
Arch Angel Gabriel is shown as having just arrived to bring the news of Christ to the world. His hand is held in the "blessing hand of Christ" as it spells out "IC XC". These letters stand for "Jesus Christ" in Greek. He is entirely lit by the light coming off of Mary. He holds a staff signifying his authority as coming from God.
If you live in the Denver area or are visiting, please make sure to stop by the Augustine Institute to see the painting in person!
