In 1858, Katharine Drexel was born into a wealthy Philadelphia family. The Drexels prayed daily and provided food, clothing and rent to those in need. When Katharine witnessed the suffering within African-American and Native American communities, she became determined to use her fortune to help them. In 1891, Katharine made religious vows and started the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament. They taught in schools, missions and reservations throughout the U.S. and still do today.
