Born in 1495, John was an impulsive and determined man who had many adventures as a shepherd, soldier, servant, and religious bookseller. John eventually founded a hospital for the poor in Granada, Spain. His assistants there formed the Brothers Hospitallers. Their symbol is the pomegranate. It is the namesake of Granada and represents hope and eternal life in the Christian faith.
