Commissioned by a graduating class of deacons for the Archdiocese of Denver, Colorado, this traditional icon of Saint Francis will hang at the Archdiocese center. What a great honor it was to complete this icon for them and to pray for all 19 deacons while I worked.
A bit about the symbolism:
The 19 blades of grass on the bottom represent each deacon that graduated. On either side of icon you can two blades of grass reaching out. These are the deacons being sent out into the world two by two.
The son and the moon are shown on the top left and right. Saint Francis referred to them as Bother Son and Sister Moon. He had a profound understanding of God through creation.
The skyline is taken directly from a photo of the Denver skyline.
Saint Francis hold the Archdiocese of Denver chapel and bell tower in his hand while his other hand is extended towards to viewer as an invitation to walk the path of holiness.
While this icon is very location specific, I believe it will fit in any home that wants to honor this great saint.
