Italian-born Saint Anselm was a 12th-century Benedictine monk who later became
Archbishop of Canterbury, England. He was an insightful teacher, philosopher and
theologian, and wise in the ways of political governance. He also defended the church’s freedoms, which were under attack at the time. His motto, “faith seeking understanding”, characterized his writings and in 1720 he was named a Doctor of the Church!
