Saint Aidan was a first-century monk who was invited to become a bishop in northern England to help combat the return of paganism in the region. As bishop, Aidan evangelized his people with a father’s gentle care. He established the monastery of Lindisfarne as a center of faith and learning. Once, when a pagan army set fire to the city near Lindisfarne, Aidan’s prayers turned the fire away.
