Jorge Mario Bergoglio was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Ordained as a priest in 1969, he became Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998 and was named a Cardinal in 2001. Pope Francis is the first Jesuit pope and the first pope from the Americas or the Southern Hemisphere. He’s also the first pope named Francis and selected the name after St. Francis of Assisi because of his special care and concern for the poor. He’s shown this time and again as he’s chosen more simple living and transportation methods than popes from the recent past. In addition to his dedication to the less fortunate, Pope Francis is recognized for his efforts to promote interfaith dialogue and unity among different religious communities, fostering a message of peace and understanding.
