Promote the path to holiness modeled by the first canonized Native American Saint with this St. Kateri Tekakwitha shirt.
The first canonized Native American, St. Kateri's skin was scarred from her childhood due to smallpox. She was humiliated by this and tried to cover her face with a blanket growing up. When she came of age, she refused to carry out her cultural expectations, denying proposals and receiving punishment of extra labor. At nineteen years old, she converted to Catholicism and took a vow of chastity to only marry Jesus. This was met with persecution within her people, and she fled to a native Christian community. Jesuit missionaries there attested to her great devotion and mortification, along with her fervent prayers for those of her tribe. Only five years later, she succumbed to sickness and died. Kateri's dedication to purity, prayer, and being counter-cultural for the sake of Truth are a testament to us today for the courage it takes to pursue holiness. Around her death, witnesses saw her face change from its long-scarred appearance to a radiant beauty like that of a healthy child.
Oh, St. Kateri Tekakwitha who sought union with God above all cultural obstacles, pray for us!
