On January 25, 1959, Pope John XXIII convoked the Second Vatican Council, initiating a series of history-shaping achievements and crises. Yet, as The Church in Crisis: A History of the General Councils, 325-1870—published one year after that convocation—illustrates, Vatican II is but one among many in that regard. Philip Hughes (1895–1967) was a Roman Catholic priest, ecclesiastical historian, and prolific author. After holding a professorship in history at St. Thomas College, he served as pastor at various English parishes, as archivist for the Archdiocese of Westminster, and as professor of history at the University of Notre Dame, where he concluded his career. Outstanding among his many works is the three-volume A History of the Church.
